Re: Is there a way to use social media in lead generation?

My only caution is to make sure you do not add the noise people receive on products. I had my son complain to me how Facebook is causing email spam -- these are issues marketers have long struggled to perfect. It is clear though, that social media for many products and offerings is a great forum to ...

Re: Switching into market

I think the role of product management is a key entry point. You can also look to take a few steps by participating in some external marketing activities such as volunteering for trade show duties, running technical web seminars, etc. If you also participate in any of the company's customer communic...

Re: HP and Palm - a match made in ....

I think HP has no room for the fire any more they have so many irons in it -- ! I can't imagine this being a good thing for the Palm technology, but they already lost the battle to RIM and Apple. This is all playing out similar to the Oracle, Sybase, Informix battles of the 80s, 90s.

Re: HP and Palm - a match made in ....

I'm a big fan of spinning out independent businesses so innovation can flourish. It may be that HP could create great solutions over time but by the time they get to market, the bulk of the leadership opportunity is over. It's true that not all companies want or need to be leaders in what they do an...

Re: How do you know that your product is successful in the field

I think the answer varies for sure, but here are some that I like: 1. Is the complete set of product functionality actually being used? Some products launch on a bunch of features but many are not actually valuable (just hype). If you create a product that people end up fully using, you have a reall...

Re: Who is responsible for the quality of the software produced?

OK, so my last reply was a bit short. I like the model where first and foremost, one person or team has the authority to stop product shipment if quality is below a certain threshold (usually measured by open issues or their ability to impact customer satisfaction. Having said that, it's not easy to...

Re: Who is responsible for quality?

There are many operating model examples where anyone in the company can stop the production lines -- Sequent was one back in the day. The goal is to have someone who perhaps does not specifically have to worry about revenues or other aspects of company behavior able to stand up for product quality a...

Re: Why We Prefer Founding CEOs

This may also depend on how well a founding CEO understands his/her strengths and weaknesses and knows how to build a team around them -- i think founding CEO's who have no sense for business will be pulled off the job quickly, those with little technical savvy last a bit longer, those with good bal...

Re: What is the best management advice you ever received?

Here are some others from my experience: 1. Let your team speak first in meetings so they don't feel like they are challenging your opinion from the start. I find poor leaders often think it is best to say their mind first putting everyone else in the position of challenging them if their opinions a...
