I want reports but Finance is busy, what should I do?

We have a small finance department who spend a lot of time on basic accounting, including making sure our receivables are properly collected in a timely fashion. Nonetheless, I need some detailed reports on how the business is doing so we can make some important decisions about the next 18 months. Should I do the work myself and generate the reports, increase the workload on Finance (which is already heavy), or make the decisions as best we can with the data already available? I hear lots of people talk about the importance of business metrics -- how much of a priority should I make this over other responsibilities Finance has?
