What comp should I consider for my first direct rep?

I'm just building up my business now and am considering hiring my first direct rep. We have been largely selling small deals via inside sales so this is a big step for our business. I am concerned we won't have enough of a pipeline to feed a direct rep for the first 6 months so it may be hard to reach a large quota. I thought about using a higher base in the first year given we are trying to build a business and I don't want the rep to spend all his time worrying about compensation but nonetheless, they are highly paid and I do want the candidate to be motivated to bring in the larger deals and not get caught up selling the small fish our inside team could sell.
