If you have an idea that applies to a field, you have no contacts in that field, what is the best way to meet some?

Toronto is an excellent place to network with people who have similar needs to yours. As an example, there are organized groups for young entrepreneurs, vertical groups focusing on certain operational specialties (like product management), forums for meeting financing people, etc. For established industries there are usually vendor and partner events as well which is a good place to see what is going on in an area you are considering entering.

(forums like this one also work www.insidespin.com)

A couple of more to add.

- Search LinkedIn for like-minded people - reach out and do interest interviews.
- Ask friends/colleagues in the industry what they think of the idea
- Go to tradeshows/conferences - lead conversations into the area that your idea is related to (<- I like this one personally)
