This may also depend on how well a founding CEO understands his/her strengths and weaknesses and knows how to build a team around them -- i think founding CEO's who have no sense for business will be pulled off the job quickly, those with little technical savvy last a bit longer, those with good balance between the two but also who are willing to secede some operational responsibilities to those with experience do best.

The common element from the examples in the articles may be they are all great leaders which is foremost what the CEO needs to be -- i don't think a CEO needs any particular operational strength to be the CEO (they usually do have one), but they do need to be great leaders. Maybe that's where the focus should be for VC's -- look for great leaders not specifically people who know how to read financial statements, have sales experience or are only innovative.
